Why Compliance Check is Mandatory?

Each year in Victoria, an average of four children lose their lives in backyard pool or spa drownings, with many more hospitalized due to near-drowning incidents. To enhance safety, the 2019 Pool and Spa Safety Barrier Regulations require pool and spa owners to have their safety barriers inspected every four years. These inspections are governed by the Building Regulations 2018, which establish specific standards to prevent unauthorized access and reduce drowning risks. A Barrier Compliance Inspection is a thorough assessment designed to ensure that pool and spa barriers comply with Victorian safety regulations.

Inspection Steps

Registar your pool/spa

Contact the local council (via their website or in person) to initiate the registration process. Councils will provide a registration letter to the owner with written confirmation regarding their 'Barrier Standard". This information is then provided to the pool inspector so they can complete the safety inspection.

Prepare for a pool / spa inspection

The Pool Inspector will conduct an on-site barrier inspection based on the information provided in the Council 'registration letter.' This process involves assessing your existing pool safety barriers against the applicable Australian Standards. If the barriers meet the required standards, a Certificate of Barrier Compliance will be issued. If the standards are not met, the owner will receive a detailed report outlining the necessary Pool Safety requirements to bring the barrier into compliance.

Lodge Your Certificate

The owner is required to submit the 'Certificate of Barrier Compliance' to their local council within 14 days of the issue date. Additionally, pool and spa owners should schedule an inspection every 4 years to obtain a new certificate. We will stay in contact with the owner to ensure they never miss the deadline
